-The Short is designed for 27.5 and 700c wheels. Fits tires up to 27.5 x 2.8″ or 700c x 50mm.
-The Tall is designed for maximum mud clearance and bikes with 29″ tires. Fits tires up to 29 x 3.25″.

ELKHORN SHORT DETAILS

– The Elkhorn comes in two sizes; Short and Tall.

—- The Tall is designed for maximum mud clearance and bikes with 29″ tires. Fits tires up to 29 x 3.25″.

Short vs Tall recommendations are based on an attachment to the axle. To attach to the frame eyelets: If the fork eyelets on a 29″ wheel are very high, it is possible that Elkhorn Short adapts better, leaving less space between the platform and the wheel.

– Made of 6061 aluminum, the rack is light, stiff and strong. The side legs are made from 1/2″ (13mm) diameter tubing while the top deck perimeter tubing is 14.1mm.
– The deck measures 100 mm x 266 mm
– The deck includes slots for easily lashing gear in place and holes for mounting a light.
– The Elkhorn comes standard, eyelet mount ready with optional fit kits available for thru axle or QR mounting.
– Load capacity of 11.34kg
– Powder coated a sleek and refined shade of black
– If you want more precise fit information, the height from the mounting point to the deck is 371mm on the Short and 420mm on the tall. Be sure to leave room for debris and mud clearance.
– Rack frame made in Asia and the rest is made in the USA.

Our Fit Kits take the weight off your frame and moves it to the axle; the part of your bike that’s designed to be super stiff and carry a ton of weight. The fit kit includes a new axle that substitutes the original axle of your bike. So, it is important to know the thread pitch and length of your axle. FAQ

Do I need a fit kit for the Elkhorn?

No and yes. The Elkhorn comes ready to be mounted to the eyelets of the frame. So if your frame has eyelets you do not need a fit kit. However, if your bike does not have eyelets or if you just want the benefits of an axle mount, then you need a fit kit.

Ok, I need a fit kit. But which and what is included?

The Fit Kit includes pucks, zip ties, clear protective tape and a new QR or axle. The axle susbstitutes the original axle of your bike so it is important that they have the same thread pitch. If you do not know the thread pitch of your axle our Bike Finder can help you.

Is the Bike Finder up to date?

We try our best to keep the Bike Finder updated and in 99.9% of the cases we are spot on. But bike manufacturers can change the configuration of a bike from one year to another or even from one model to another. So it is always a good idea to double check the two axles before you mount the rack.

What is the benefit of an axle mounted rack?

Well, first of all, every bike has a wheel and a center of a wheel, so this allows us to mount Old Man Mountain racks on pretty much any bike with a thru axle. Additionally, there are a few other benefits:

– All the weight is carried on the axle, which is the most secure, durable and lowest mounting point on the bike.

-On eyelet-mounted racks, the bolts are in shear, which is fairly weak when stressed over time. Our axles provide a physical interface for the rack that is far stronger for carrying load.

– Axle mounted racks can be used on suspension bikes and require no adjustment to suspension settings.

Can I use any side panniers on the Elkhorn?

No you can not. We strongly advice you to use the 3 eyelets on side legs for cargo cages, bottle holders or small cylindrical dry bags. But do not hang side panniers for the upper platform. But you can perfectly carry load on top of the rack platform, for example an Atlas or Juniper bag.

What I can use the 3 eyelets on the Elkhorn and Pizza Rack for?

Oh, you can use these 3 holes for a variety of things.

The Elkhorn and Pizza Rack have 3 eyelets on each of the side legs. They are for a purpose, so you can attach accessories.
– Use the Widefoot CageMount so you can switch between softbags and waterbottles depending on your needs.
– Use the Widefoot LiterCage so you can carry large Nalgene water bottles.
– Use them to attach softbags, or fork mounted bags.

Front or rear?

The Elkhorn can be mounted both front and rear. For shorter rides maybe only a front Elkhorn and no rear rack.
For longer rides, a good combo is a Divide in the rear and an Elkhorn in the front.

Two sizes?

Yes, the Elkhorn comes in 2 sizes. Short and Tall, for a better fit to the bike.
