Carradice — Brand Story
Carradice is one of the last true heritage brands in cycle luggage: a family-run workshop in Nelson, Lancashire, handcrafting bike bags in the same town for more than 90 years. The story began in the late 1920s and early 1930s, when Wilf Carradice, an enthusiastic cyclist, grew frustrated with the saddlebags available at the time and decided to make his own. Starting from a back bedroom, he stitched rugged bags from heavy-duty materials, quickly attracting orders from local riders and shops.

By 1932 the operation had formalised into Carradice of Nelson, and within a few years the company was supplying bags not only for cyclists but also for motorbike tourists, while expanding into tents, sleeping bags and clothing. In the 1970s, Wilf passed the business to Neville and Sheila Chadwick, who refocused the brand on cycling luggage while embracing innovation—among them, early use of nylon and reflective materials. Today, under the third generation of family leadership, Carradice remains rooted in its Lancashire factory, where every bag is still cut, sewn and checked by hand before leaving the workshop.

What defines Carradice is a commitment to materials, craftsmanship and longevity over trends. The core range relies on traditional waxed cotton duck from a specialist UK mill, vegetable-tanned leather, robust metal hardware and, in limited editions, Harris Tweed from the Outer Hebrides. Designs evolve slowly, shaped by feedback from real riders—tourers, commuters, expedition cyclists and post carriers—rather than seasonal fashion cycles. Many bags are built to be repaired and refurbished, reinforcing a philosophy of “buy once, use for decades” in a market often driven by planned obsolescence.

From iconic saddlebags like the Super C and Nelson to modern commuting and bikepacking ranges, Carradice bags have accompanied riders on daily commutes, cross-country tours and round-the-world expeditions. The brand’s reputation rests on a simple promise: timeless, handcrafted British luggage that performs reliably mile after mile, year after year.
